10 Best PC Apps this week [February 2nd]

It’s that time of the week, when you don’t really know what to do. With Monday just around the corner, you might want to check if all your computer’s software are up to date, and since you have some time in hand, you may also want to see some apps that are going to cut down the hassle and make things easier for you.
This week we’ve an app that scans the running processes for virus, an app that organizes your media collection, and an extension which will notify you as soon as your favorite page has got an update.

Software

Process Explorer 16 (Type: Free, OS: Windows – all versions, Size: 2MB )

Process Explorer
The built-in Task Manager of Windows is no slouch when it comes to managing the processes and services. But it isn’t much powerful. And that’s where Process Explorer comes into play. Recently bought by Microsoft, the app monitors the running processes for viruses and infections. The virus engine is provided by VirusTotal, an online service which uses a wide range of popular security suites.
In addition to a much detailed analysis and controls over it, there is an option to make this app your default task manager.

Junior Icon Editor (Type: Free, OS: Windows – all versions, Size: 6MB )

If you are looking for an icon editor, you might as well stop looking as Junior Icon Editor sports every feature under the hood.
Besides providing you with the options to set the image dimension, and a gamut of file formats such as ICO, PNG, XBM and ICPR it also lets you pick the platform – Windows, Android, iOS, Linux and Windows Phone environment where you would like to render the output file. It is powerful and gives you a wide range of features to spice up the icon.

Collbee (Type: OS: Free, Windows – all versions, Size: 25MB )

Collbee
If you store movies and TV series on your hard-drive, then take Collbee for a spin. Not only does it help to organize all your movies and shows, it also adds cover image and meta information such as storyline, casts etc. It’s free, and will take a few minutes to process all the information on its first run. In addition, it also renames and assorts the files.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 2.0 (Type: Trial, OS: Windows – all versions, Size: )

Malwarebytes
Popular security firm Malwarebytes made available the first public beta of its security suite Anti-Malware a few hours ago. The new version which is paid-only as of now, has revamped its User Interface which now displays more information.
If you’re thinking of getting this Anti-Malware, this might be your last chance, since it is killing the lifetime licensing and turning that into a monthly-subscription. You can run this app from this temporary license.
User ID: MBAM2BETA
Serial Key: 4XZHE-6ANRN-TKWCV-EV6HZ-G79PH

NetTraffic (Type: Free, OS: Windows – all versions, Size: 500 KB)

NetTraffic
If you have a limited internet plan, then monitoring on your data usage becomes very important. We have had covered similar apps in our past issues, and NetTraffic is yet another application for that job.
Regardless of the kind of connection you are using (WiFi, wired broadband), it will let you know about your current connectivity speed and how much data you have used in a particular instant of time. The data speed bars run silently on the taskbar.

Browser Extensions

Page Monitor (Chrome)

Be it is an exam result, or some official announcement, keep hitting the refresh page is a tiresome job. With this extension you can keep track of your favorite pages, and as soon as anything on that page changes or updates, it will give you a notification.

Streamus (Chrome)

Playing YouTube on Chrome browser is fun, until you accidentally close the tab, in which case, it is just pain to get things restored. Streamus is here to change it. Once you have got this extension installed in your browser, you don’t need to go to the website as just “Streamus: song-you-want-to-play” and hitting enter will start that video.

Cache Killer (Chrome)

While cache files help you save bandwidth, but it too possess a fair share of shortcomings. For instance, if you have the cache file of a particular web page stored in your browser, may be the next time you will visit the page you aren’t really presented with the most current version of that page. To tackle with it, you can use Cache Killer, an extension for Chrome that deletes the existing cache files automatically.

Facebook Chat Pro (Chrome)

Using this extension you can get desktop notifications, a feature of Chrome that lets you see the notifications even when the browser is minimized, or if you have another application running on top of it. Another cool feature of it will prevent the recipient from knowing if you have read the message or not.

Supertab (Firefox)

Having multiple tabs open on your browser is a jarring task. And things get only worse when you start looking for the tab you had just opened or left. Supertab is an extension which tries to fix that broken model. Click Alt+Tab or Ctrl + Tab to cycle through all the opened extensions in the order of its recently opened tab first.

Software updates

LIBREOFFICE 4.2.0

It’s one of those updates which although can’t list many new features, but make the software faster and stabler. With several new tweaks, the user interface itself looks pretty neat. “70 percent of our dialogs now refreshed with many distributed UI tweaks. This release also includes a beautiful new ‘flat’ icon theme, Sifr, and an updated set of default document styles. “ writes LibreOffice in a blogpost.
In addition, TeamViewer got a new scaling mode, and Evernote did some bug fixes.

Tip of the week: Check whether an idea has been patented

If you have come up with an idea that you think can revolutionized the world, you can head over to Google Patents search, a division of its search engine which will confirm if your idea is original.
Well, even if you don’t have an idea at this moment, you can browse through the page, it is pretty cool place to kill time.
