Samsung Galaxy Gear Watch Gets a Huge Price Cut in India, Available for Rs.14990 ($239)

Samsung’s first ever wearable device, the Galaxy Gear smartwatch has got its second price cut this month, and now costs Rs. 14,990 (~$239) in India. It was launched for an exorbitant price of Rs. 22,990 back in September last year, alongside the Galaxy Note 3 phablet. There is no news of the price cut in other parts of the world yet.

The smartwatch carries some cool specs which could rival some old smartphones. It is powered by a 800 MHz processor, 512 MB of RAM and 4 GB of internal storage space. The device also has Bluetooth 4.0, which it will use for connecting to other devices. The display is a 1.63 inch Super AMOLED touchscreen display with a resolution of 320 x 320. And the best part? It comes with a 1.9MP camera which can take quick photos or 720p video.
With such brilliant specs, it still failed to take the market by storm. Why was that so? Well, it failed in the areas which matter the most. Battery & compatibility. Incomparison to Pebble, Galaxy Gear promises just a day of battery life, and that’s terrible. Also, it’s compatible with a handful of Samsung’s own Galaxy devices which is also a big downside. But Samsung was still hopeful as it had a lot of things going for it, including the looks.

That changed with the new Pebble Steel announced at CES 2014. The US based wearable startup surprised many with new look Pebble Steel range. Pebble now looks as stunning as the Galaxy Gear, if not more. At $249, Pebble undercut Galaxy Gear by $50, so it was only logical for Samsung to act fast and reduce the price. Interestingly, the Korean giant is yet to make price cut announcements in US and other markets, but don’t be surprised if you see a big slash in the near future.
